It started off fairly strong -- the style and plotting hearken back to when le Carre was passing the time with George Smiley and friends. But the last ten pages lapse into this horrible deus ex machina that simply retreads the usual, tired anti-Americanism that seems to be le Carre's stock in trade these days.

Hugh I'm surprised that you picked this up. Le Carre hasn't written anything good since the early 1990s. Single & Single? Absolute Friends? Ugh.

Mike My father had it with him on our last fishing trip, so when he finished it, I figured I'd give le Carre one last try. My mistake. It's a shame -- I still think that The Quest for Karla is one of the best espionage series ever written.
