it was amazing
bookshelves: novels
Read in November, 2000

When A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius first appeared in 2000, it made me look at novel-writing in a whole new way. Dave Egger's work has gotten some hard knocks in recent years, mainly because he makes it looks so darn easy. This book, part memoir, part fiction about Dave and Toph Egger's life together after their parents died within a year of each other, is wrenching, funny, and eye-opening in its inventiveness.
