3.5 stars. There's a lot to like about this book--an unconventional hero, a bit of mystery, and a nice job with the Victorian setting. But I just didn't find it particularly compelling after the first two-thirds. The heroine paints, but this activity seems to be the author's way of portraying the heroine as an independently minded woman. Painting doesn't actually have any relevance to the plot and it seemed like window-dressing to me.

I did like the hero and the role of his profession in the plot. I thought his capitulation to love a bit quick. His character seemed more angsty to me.

All in all, Mr. Kennedy was an above average read. I'll definitely be trying another of Stone's Scotland Yard books. The gorgeous covers are nearly worth the price of the book!
