This book is about Chen Pie Sou a school headmaster in Vietnam who would do anything for his family. He is a likeable character with faults of his own, drinking, gambling and sleeping with prostitutes.

The book is kind of flat at times but not terrible. You feel for Chen Pie Sou towards the end of the book when you realize that he always was just trying to do the right things for the people that he loved. His character is weak and strong at the same time. His ex-wife, teacher Mak, and others really use his affinity for his family as a weakness to get what they want from the headmaster. At times I felt sorry for headmaster Pervical but I can't say that I ever really liked him.

Not suspenseful but interesting.
