it was amazing
bookshelves: children, caldecott, picture-books, historical-fiction
Read in August, 2012

The book won a 1998 Caldecott Honor. I actually it a lot better than I thought I would, given the title. It was done completely different from another other book. It is set during the Great Depression and is the story of a young girl who communicates with her family via letters, which make up the entire text of the book. Lydia Grace lives with her parents and grandmother in the country at the start of the book, but after her father loses his job, she is sent to live with her Uncle Jim in the city. Her uncle is a dour-faced baker, who never seems happy about anything. That is until Lydia Grace starts to brighten up his life with her presence and flowers. Highly recommended for ages 5-9, 5 stars.
