What a pleasure it was to read this book. As a kid, I loved Greek mythology and all the stories about heroes and gods, and their human foibles and vices. Here we are told the story of Patroclus and Achilles, the beautiful demigod, invincible in battle. The love between the two young boys is described tenderly, sweetly, and it's impossible not to love them also, immersed in their idyllic life at first, and then thrown into a war that both knew they would not survive. The story is told in the voice of Patroclus; a much easier way to read the Illiad than plowing to the Homeric verses.
