I first read this book when I was about 12 years old. The Welch-accented dialogue from one character is tough going at first, and Alan Garner is never an author to give you more information than you absolutely need at that moment, but the story is like wild magic let loose - strange and dangerous and it grows to take you right into a climax that is terrifying if you really let go and let your imagination conjure it up in its full glory. Unlike many books I read at that age, it was just as good to read it now as then.
