really liked it

Probably a 4.5 stars. I loved this book. I think it comes out next month (I read an advanced copy). This is why I liked it:
Based on a (very cool) true story, the book is about a Cambodian family who literally lives at the city dump. The wife accidentally discovers that her belligerent, drunk rent collector can read, so she asks her to teach her. The story tells of a surprising friendship, the power of literature, and finding hope in the most unlikely circumstances. I really liked the spunky main character more and more each chapter. At first, I thought the book was a little heavy-handed with adjectives and descriptions, but by chapter 3, it seemed to fall into a more balanced rhythm. It addresses some hard topics, but in totally appropriate ways. I was sad when the book ended, and I think it would be a great book club pick.
