What a great book. I really could not stop reading! After trying but not succeeding in enjoying "Fallen", I had forgotten how great Karin Slaughter could be. This early book reminded me of it in all the right ways. The story was so twisted and tangled there was no way to ever know what was going to happen. But at the same time, that tangling is the reason I gave it only 4 stars...there was just a little bit to much convolution at times, and you could almost see as you read how Slaughter was trying to write herself out of it. In my opinion, a little less of that would not have harmed this amazing book in any way.

Be warned, this is NOT in anyway a light read. This is truly dark stuff, even considering it comes from the generally bold Karin Slaughter. It was difficult and unnerving in many ways. But I raced to the end relentlessly, and my faith in her writing has been fully restored. If you love a true hard-edged thriller and a bit of Southern gothic mixed in, do not pass this up!
