Tallis evokes an atmosphere from turn of the century Vienna so vividly you can feel it. You can taste the gugelhupf and smell the großer brauner. The mystery brushes up against the shoulders of Freud, Mahler and royal personages. This book was less a mystery and more a thriller, in my opinion. Neither the plot nor the characters are all that great. But the mix of 19th century institutions with 20th century philosophies and political forces make for compelling reading - and all in the gaslit cobblestoned velvet-draped Austrian capital.
