I first read this novel around 1995 when I was in a book discussion group. I did like it a lot, thought it was a rich piece of literature. And it made me curious about other works of Carol Shields. So I've read a number of her works.
About a month ago, I decided to reread THE STONE DIARIES. Much of it I'd forgotten, and it was odd to read my occasional pencil-written comments; still, I found that I agreed with my "younger self" in many cases about passages I found meaningful. I highly recommend this novel! I surely never realized just how much pleasure a rereading would give to me. So, fellow readers, remember that many, many books and stories ARE indeed worth a second or third or even fourth look. Alas, poor Carol Shields passed away a few years back. Luckily, she has left for us THE STONE DIARIES and UNLESS (quite a different work from ..DIARIES). Set aside some hours to savor the work of this terrific writer.

Sharon I also read it in 1995 and you inspired me to re-read it. Thanks.

message 2: by Jane (new)

Jane Tunley I loved this book when I read it years ago, I think I will read it again now. Many years have passed and I remember little about it, except the birth at the start of the book. Perhaps having a poor memory will turn out to be a good thing. I may fall in love with her writing all over
