The author assumes a knowledge of some simple French phrases, French history, art history, etc. -- which I have, but I wondered how the non-initiated would respond. I can see, hear, and feel many of the references, but as a former editor I would need to get the opinion of someone who does not bring some of this previous knowledge to the book. Some better illustrations would make the narrative so much more interesting -- how about a Mona Lisa in color, a photo of how (small) she looks on her wall, better photographs of Picasso, Apollinaire, etc.?
