This is an amazing story of a kid that develops Tourette's when he is 5 years old. It runs his life and makes everything so difficult for him. What makes this book so interesting is that it is written in first person--the perspective of the kid. Generally, when you see a kid doing things he shouldn't be doing--outbursts, jumping, touching others, etc.--you think the kid should exercise more self-control. So you blame the kid (and most kids do deserve the blame) but this story is so different!
Read this book and see all this kid goes through: different meds, more meds, his own body revolting against him, problems with other kids and teachers. He really struggles and his parents do too--they all deserve respect for what they were able to do.
I've never been one to make fun of people with real problems and it bothers me to see people that do. I hope those mean people (or maybe just insensitive) will read this book and have a change of heart. We should all be thankful for our good health.
One year while teaching 7th grade, I had a student whose mother thought he had Tourette's. The funny thing is that he seemed very quiet. The other teachers said he made strange noises, but not in my advanced math class. He spent most of his time trying to do the math problems I would put on the board in his head--he didn't like to write. Some of the kids could get pretty excited when they could solve a really hard problem, but he showed little emotion. I have often wondered about Jason.
This book is interesting, easy to read, and a real page turner!
