Breaking Twig is, at heart, the story of a young girl (Twig) and her mama. The problem is it gets so weighed down with its own ideas (if I read "Picks" and "Pickers" one more time, I'd have screamed) that it loses any real chance to captivate the reader. Parts of this book are well done and there's a nice Southern flavor, but lack of character development, motives, realism and far too much tipping its hand at what's to come leave this book in the it's mostly okay column rather than in the "I can't wait to tell my pal about it" one.
