4 and 1/2 stars

I've been drawn to the fairy-tale story of the sisters Snow-White and Rose-Red since I was very young. I was disappointed by one 'retelling' I read earlier this year, but not this one. This one comes close to 5 stars for me. The author has expanded and enriched the original tale, with luminous passages and wonderful storytelling about what it means to be human; to be a part of and connected to the pattern of life and death; and the consequences of trying to hide oneself and protect one's children from the real world.

The many characters are all wonderfully drawn and the inventive plot is told from various viewpoints as the story advances, which may sound confusing but wasn't: it was admirably executed.
