The writing style of this book is lyrical, beautiful, metaphorical, sparse. Does that sound contradictory? The book is very short with pithy text and it requires the reader to fill in the gaps. That is what makes this book so beautiful. Set in the 1690's, it chronicles 4 women's lives- women who are all enslaved literally and metaphorically. I love that it focuses on Europeans, African Americans, Native Americans, and indentured servants. I also like Morrison's technique of using multiples voices to tell the story. This is classic Morrison. When she is on her game, very few can compare to her. It would be wonderful to teach this book for its style.
