Very moving and, at times, difficult to read. Before reading this book, I had no idea about the people of Lithuania who were forcibly removed from their homes and sent to labor camps to basically work until they died from malnutrition, starvation, disease, cold, or until they annoyed the wrong NKVD officer and got shot. It's a heart-breaking story, and it ends a bit abruptly, but at the end, there's still hope.

Note: I listened to the audiobook version of this. There wasn't good differentiation in the audio between the main parts of the story and the flashbacks, so that was confusing in a way that it probably wouldn't have been if I'd read the book instead of listening to it.
