I won this book as part of the Goodreads First Reads program. Overall, I felt the author did a good job explaining the area and not just football, although that was a bit of a surprise to me. The book is more about the struggles of a low-income area, where the only way out for a lot of young men is getting a Division 1 football scholarship. Mealer doesn't only stick to football players though, and I appreciated the perspective of the young women from the muck too. I would estimate the first half of the book discussed the everglades are historically, and the second have focused more on the football. I gave it 4 stars because it was a good balance between the two, and it was well-written (at times the book read like a novel).
