my friend lent me this and i had to put it down, I'm not sure why the author felt it necessary to reitterate the differences between bottlenose and steno dolphins every couple pages, but did not decide to endure the rest of the book to find out

Ken-ichi Aw. I read this whole series a couple years ago (well, maybe 6 or 7) and liked them all, with the possible exception of Sundiver. The latter half of the series is radically different from the first half, so it's possible you might like those better. I seem to recall Brin as a fairly utilitarian writer though, so if you're not as down with that brand of semi-hard SF geekery (why did I have to write that...) you might not like them either.
