Defending friend Mari from her ex-husband, then fighting off 3 burly attackers, who turned out to be police officers in civilian clothes, lands Pepper in BIG trouble! He was taken by the 3 cops, who he nicknamed Hewey, Dewey and Louie, to the nearby mental institution, (being too lazy to process the paperwork involved, therefore letting the doctor there handle it!) Pepper was ‘processed’ and informed he would be there for 72 hours, and released (if he behaved himself). But when they started feeding him his sedating meds, which knocked him out totally, he exploded…

He made friends with Dorry, a resident who had been there for decades, who made herself his unofficial ‘protector’. Also his room-mate Coffee, who was trying to let the outside world know of the conditions inside the institution, and Loochie, a teenage fireball who’d been in and out of institutions since she was 13. When Pepper was attacked one night by a weird ‘thing’ which looked part human, part animal, he found to his horror that the staff and residents knew about this Devil, and actually looked after it!

With time passing, and the date of Pepper’s release looking increasingly further away (he wasn’t a mental patient after all…was he?) he decided he needed to do something. So he enlisted his new friends, and together the four of them decided to eliminate the Devil, before other terrifying happenings occurred. But fighting the system, the continual sedation and restraints, the mind games by both staff and residents became a deadly battle.

What would happen to Pepper and his friends? Was it possible to kill the Devil? Or would their struggle get swept under the carpet….

Interesting, different, a little long in places, but also horrifying to think what happened to Pepper probably can happen (not the Devil part…the false incarceration!)
