it was amazing

Got this a couple of years ago and have read it about six times. I've always loved ancient Rome and have read a lot about the period covered in this book. So why do I keep re-reading it? Simply because it's the best book about this period I've seen. Not only does Holland tell the story, and the background, to the end of the Republic but he gives an insight into the characters and their motivations. He also draws a vivid picture of what Rome was like in the 1st Century BC. All sorts of little details, like the heated pools in the villas in the Bay of Naples, bring the story to life. Brilliant.
