This title is part of Mc Call Smith's second mystery series, set in Edinburgh Scotland. The main character in this series is Isabel Dalhousie, who edits a moral philosophy journal and can't help meddling in other people's problems. At the age of forty something, she has taken up with a musician ten years younger than her, and has had a baby named Charlie. She investigates a case where an eminent doctor is accused of falsifying research records. In this series, the city of Edinburgh is portrayed with affection as it serves as the backdrop for Isabel's cases. Once again, as in the popular Ladies #1 Detective Agency series, the author has constructed another convincing and sympathetic woman protagonist.
