Lucretia and the Kroons
by Victor LaValle
by Victor LaValle
I hate scary movies and usually stay away from thrillers. But I have to say, I really liked this short story. The whole story was fast-paced and intense and totally imaginative. It was sad, it was happy, it was crazy. I never felt the same emotion from page-to-page, well, screen to screen as I read this on a computer. I really liked it until the end. The last paragraph "explaining things" seemed like a little bit of a cop-out to me. The story was fantastical and it seemed like the author needed to pull the reins a little and it was like he didn't know how to justify the journey in a rational world. I think my twelve year old self would just stare, mouth open, angry at the last page.
It's definitely worth checking out. I'm interested to read some of LaValle's other works because the story itself was actually quite entertaining, well written, and touching.
