Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli is a perfect read-aloud for first and second graders, or an independent read for beginning chapter book readers. George, aka "Suds", is entering third grade, and according to the playground chant, third graders are angels (fourth grade rats). George wants nothing more than to be the first in his class to earn the halo for being the most perfect student. But being perfect is harder than he thought; and does his teacher have spies watching them outside of school, too? The lighthearted black and white illustrations add kid appeal, and each chapter ending will make kids want to find out what happens next. This will be a popular book in my library!
