While there is some added whimsy in the book references peppered throughout the plot, this story succeeds more in capturing the minds and motivations of tween girls as they dance between innocence and girl-created politics. I liked that the main character was believably unique and had a well-conveyed family with parents who existed with a foot in each culture. In one slim volume, this book explores the challenges of friendships evolving into middle grade, first generation cultural issues, and manages to offer instructions for a craft at the end. Definitely a keeper.
