Read in July, 2012

I read this book in one day, it was such an easy and engrossing read. About to visit Morocco for the first time this fall, I am reading up on the area. Without hitting the reader over the head with it, Laila Lalami paints an interesting picture of the evolution of Morocco's atmosphere from a more open-minded, liberal country to a more hard-line, fundamental one. I've read a lot about this in the last year and share the concerns of many Moroccans that their country is moving backwards, not forward, to a less tolerant approach. Tolerance doesn't flourish when an extreme religious minority gain power.
