Read this last night and loved it--I've always been a big fan of Beth Kery's writing. Hero is a dark, mysterious billionaire, but I really appreciated how the heroine challenges him--heck, she even fences against him. Only two chapters in and there already was one scene that made my contacts fog. (Steamy!)
Note that this is a serialized novel, with new chapters being released every Tuesday for the next eight weeks. This part, Part I, was two chapters long.
As as side note, I find that the concept of a serialized novel really works for me. It's the same reason I've started watching more TV series than movies--as a working mom with two young kids I often don't have time to sit down for two hours and watch an entire movie, but I can easily pick up a 22 or 44 minute show each week. I'll be curious to see if more publishers begin releasing these...

Julie, I read this last night and loved it too! And your reasons for loving the serial format totally match mine. I'm so busy and tired at the end of the day that I often don't have a lot of reading time. This was the perfect size. Can't wait for the next installment!
Julie, you convinced me to give this one a try, and I have to admit, it is pretty steamy. But, i was little bummed that it ended right when things started to get really good ;). Gonna have to check out the next installment.
D.G: Aren't the covers gorgeous?Laurie: I felt like I'd completed something--the length really worked for me.
Anna: She really packed a lot into those first two chapters, didn't she? Glad you're enjoying it so far!

All 8 of the 'novelettes' are finished, why weren't they published together as a book? At 1.99 a pop, trotting these brief little 'novelettes' out once a week will wind up costing the reader $16 for around 400 pages. That's ridiculous, and a total-rip off to the consumer.
If I want to savor a novel, I read a chapter at a time and put it aside. I've read and enjoyed all your books, Ms. James; but I am really ashamed of you pimping this travesty for an author who just happens to write for the same publisher you do, Penguin/Berkely.
If the consumer buys into this, we will be buying these horribly expensive serials from now on; as all publishers and authors with poor ethics will be jumping on this extortion bandwagon.
There are many, many fine authors and publishers who publish excellent full-length novels for $5 or less without trying to cheat the reader like this. Penguin should keep this in mind; they are not the only game in town. This is nothing but a scam to squeeze more money out of readers.
BamaGal,I appreciate that the serialized concept won't work for everyone-- that's why I addressed that in my review, and specifically mentioned that this part is two chapters long. Readers absolutely should judge whether they feel $1.99 is worth that. But I don't think it's a "scam"--readers can vote with their pocketbooks whether they want to see more serialized novels.
Also, I've had no conversations with anyone connected to Penguin/Berkley about writing a review for this book. Nor did the author ask me to do so. I bought this myself, read it the day it came out, and I really enjoyed Part I--I thought the fencing scene had great sexual tension, liked that the heroine had some spunk to her, and absolutely wanted to read more. I posted my review here at Goodreads because that's what I do for all the books I enjoy.
$16.00 for a book is a scam, plain and simple. Why aren't they .99 ?? that comes out to a much more reasonable $8 for the final book. When an author whose books I enjoy peddles the idea of (ridiculously expensive) serialization, it makes me very uneasy.
Okay, so we'll agree to disagree over the definition of "scam." I enjoyed what I got for my $1.99, others will disagree. Some people probably think I'm crazy to pay $4 for a latte, but I happily hand that over to Starbucks every day.But I think it's good that readers have forums like Goodreads and Amazon to talk about exactly this. Others can then read reviews and discussions just like these and better decide whether they want to spend the money themselves.
feel a bit weary abt trying this since i read there are bdsm themes in it.. and yes it reminds me of 50 shades...

You can definitely see a 'Fifty Shades' influence in the covers...
