This may be worth 3.5 stars - it's a fast, entertaining read (which I always thinks counts for something), but, like I felt with Tropper's last novel, I somehow can't stop thinking of him as the slightly lesser love-child of Jonathan Franzen and Richard Russo. In his main character, Silver, Tropper's gone for one of Russo's lovable jackasses - the guy who screws up 99% of the time, but everyone somehow still loves him. The characters who surround him? There we have one of Franzen's patented crazy families. Still, Tropper's works are fun and witty (and I agree with other reviewers that the dialogue is where his writing really sings).

Erin I really enjoy Tropper--I didn't think i wanted to make time to read this, but I heard it was pretty good so I'll have to request it.
