I liked this book a lot. I think it is the first Roth book I've read and now I realize why he's such a superstar. He has a lot of interesting things to say about the human condition, and he says them very well. I am starting to see that the kinds of books I enjoy fit into this type - writer as anthropologist or psychologist. I saw myself in a few of the characters in this book - mostly in a bad way. The closing 100+ pages take place during a single dinner party, and seem to present every possible human strength and weakness. It would be hard not to learn something from this book.
