I really wish I could give this four and half stars, not quite five. The writing might be a bit clunky here and there but in the end it accomplishes what any adventure or fantasy novel should do with flying colors: it transports you to another world. You become engrossed in that world and can't put the book down. Damn the logic and suspend your disbelief. If you accept elves and orcs in a Tolkien novel then just accept the apes and big cats of Burroughs for the fantasy creatures that they are (throwing anything you learned from so many Discovery Channel docs out the window). You'll be a more satisfied reader for it.

Also, the Tarzan of Burroughs is far more complex than the one of Johnny Weissmuller. No Tonto/Hulk/Frankenstein speak here. This Tarzan teaches himself to read from picture books.
