did not like it

I have great memories of Dad reading this to us as kids, it was so hoplessly archaic and ridiculous that his rendition quickly became sarcastic. We all ended up in fits of laughter each time they found ANOTHER useful thing washed up on the beach/growing on the magic island, and/or shot ANOTHER hapless animal/person/moving object that crossed their path.

kingshearte That's awesome. There's definitely a part of me that wishes I'd read this with someone so I could share all the hilarity. But there's no way I'm going to subject myself to it again to achieve that.

Christa Um, they never shoot anyone. And all the things they find on the beach are from the ship. This is not a realistic story, it is an adventure story.

Megan There isn't much adventure when everything you need is always at hand, though. I'm about halfway through, and so far the book is nothing but chores and home improvement projects.
