This feels like one of those first novels the author has been planning for a long time. Brilliant little pieces here and there that you know he's been saving for years. The pace in this is fantastic. It drops a bomb, and then goes off on a tangent just long enough for you to almost-forget the explosion, and then brings it right back to the point. I have a feeling that this will prove my theory that the short list for the Man Booker often overshadow the winner on my shelf.
