** spoiler alert ** It's rare that I find a book I actually regret having read. Mainspring made the cut. The science didn't work, the main character wasn't very sympathetic, the world-building was superficial, the prose was simplistic, the plot was predictable. . . . all that, and rishathra. Not that I have any moral objections, mind you, but it's a plot point that needs skillful handling. This book read like a young adult novel based on an RPG, with some kinky sex thrown in for good measure.

That's a few hours of my life (and a library fine) that I'll never get back. . .

Chadwick Thank you. This is a novel that makes me feel as though some one has gotten away with something.
