As an adult, the book was OK, but as someone interested in children's literacy it was great. There are many places where the story just begs you (and anyone perched on your lap) to wonder what's going to happen next. The 3 year old I read it with had all sorts of logistical questions along the way, and it blew her mind to see the actual dog at the end and to learn that it all really happened. She was equally impressed that the author was also the illustrator.
