Even if it wasn't just a really well-written book, I would have been drawn to DON'T EXPECT MAGIC for the premise: A girl who is leading the antithesis of a fairytale life finds out her dad is a fairy godmother. What's not to love?

Lucky for us, beyond the catchy premise, the book is also well-written. The characters are complicated and interesting, the blinding California sun and shiny happy setting are just brilliant (you'll have to read it to see what I mean), and the plot and pace move along in an authentic, but captivating way.

I've saved my favorite for last - Delaney! The main character is just lovely. She's cranky, likes to wear black, and designs cool boots. She's just different enough from other YA characters that she's like a breath of fresh air, but she's not so different that her character is unbelievable.

This book is light and fun, definitely recommended.
