I would have rated this book 5 if I had read it when I was a little younger - I kept thinking while I read it how much my daughters would enjoy it. Still, it gets a 4 from me because it is still pretty great for an older reader.
Written by the author of "101 Dalmatians" (that alone is an excellent qualification for a writer, in my opinion), this book feels like a modern classic. It's sort of Jane Eyre/Bronte sisters/old fashioned English novel slightly updated to the 1930s and told from the point of view of an 18 year old girl writing in her journal. Poverty, love, beauty, love triangle (rectangle, even?), glamour, genius, you name it... this book has it. Smith creates an entrancing feel that makes me wish I lived in the castle, too. Well, for a weekend at least. Then I think I would like to scamper off to London...
