This was one of my favorite books for years, after reading it when I was (ah!) the tender age of 20 or 21. I was known to quote, to paraphrase, to see life in light of this book. In short, it was literary love at first read. Upon rereading it a dozen years later, I had to admit to myself that the stars (about three in goodreads-ese, actually) still shined for this book but the love wasn't there anymore. It's truly a sad moment when a book falls from the favorites list, when the magic is gone (and it kind of hurt to erase two stars from this review!)... Do I doubt myself as a reader? Perhaps I should read it again in another dozen years to see how I and the book square up.
