I just loved this book. Spartacus is one of my very favorite films, and it was fascinating to read the behind-the-scenes account of how it was made. With an all-star cast, there were a lot of healthy egos involved and Douglas has some funny stories about their elbowing. And I was intrigued to learn that he was the one who came up with the brilliant "I am Spartacus!" scene at the end of the film, and had to fight with the director to keep it in. It is also an insightful account of the blacklist and the damage it did to so many lives. I think Spartacus is that rarity, a film that was better than the book, for the novel was done in flash-backs which distanced the reader from the characters and the action. Kirk Douglas offers an honest look back, too, at his younger self through the mellow prism of age. A remarkable man, who has written a remarkable book.

Jim Karabin I will have to pick this book up; I'm a great admirer of Stanley Kubrick. The novel "Spartacus" is in my to-read pile...somewhere among these 60 or so......

Sharon Penman Stanley does not come across as a "people person," Jim, but Douglas gives full credit to his genius as a director. Have you seen the film? The book will mean more to those who have.

Jim Karabin I've watched it half a dozen times, Sharon. I like it more every time. It's one of those films where you discover something new on each viewing.

Sharon Penman I totally agree,Jim. It is that rarity, a film that is actually superior to the novel. (I feel like a traitor to my fellow writers to admit that.) But the novel used flashbacks that distanced the characters and events from the reader. The film draws the viewer in from the first scene.

Lori Jernejcic I LOVED this book, and my respect and admiration for Mr. Douglas grows every time I think about it. So many of us scream about the injustices we see around us - too few of us actually take action. He took action and actually made a change. He is a great writer as well as an author.
