did not like it

I received a copy of this book through Goodreads Firstreads. I almost never stop reading a book, but I put this one down and don't expect to go back to it. I know I am not the target audience of this book, but I do read a great deal of YA fiction and trust me, there are many books with similar subjects that are better written. Ordonez tries to use what he calls "inner voice" but instead of shifting perspectives to show how different characters or even an outside view might feel differently about the same idea, the narrative slips and slides in clunky and confusing ways. I felt like I was in a manual shift car with someone who didn't know how to use a clutch. It felt as if this were submitted in my Creative Writing class by a tearful 15 year-old, and if it were, it would deserve a C+ (but get a B-).
