really liked it
Read from July 30 to August 02, 2012

I've picked up four AT novels from the transfer station over the past months. Time to read one... Pretty good so far. Her writing style is nicely understated and free of the often annoying flights of fanciful over-writing by people(women) like Annie Dillard. But... what's transpired so far seems like no big literary deal. I've glanced at some of the ratings in Goodreads and see a lot of 5*s. Really??? We'll see... I'm not finding her description of Macon to be particularly amusing, just weird and depressing. Is it meant to be funny?
Last night... I just wrote this entry and Goodreads barfed it up and out. Anyway, I'll try to recoup. I've upgraded this book to a 4. The author has skillfully ratcheted up the emotional intensity as Macon becomes more challenged by his struggles and my heart went out to him. Anne Tyler reminds me of R.Russo and that's a good thing. Understated, simple and direct does the trick. I never saw the movie but it seems like William Hurt must've been right for Macon and Geena Davis(Best Supporting Actress Oscar) for Muriel. I'm not so sure about Kathleen Turner though. I wonder how the dog-acting went. Edward is certainly a major character. The little bastard...
Tuesday night... Getting closer to the end of this enjoyable book and now the will-he/they-won't-he/they question begins to loom. What's going to happen? I guess I'll find out tonight.
And I did find out and was a bit surprised by Macon's decision. But... the author made sure that it was a toss-up with some pain necessary for someone no matter what. Good luck to the winner(s). Realistic? Maybe not quite but then it's a novel so... Some notes:
- I loved the Leary's phone "thing". I can identify.
- Edward is describes as cashew colored in the book but illustrated as
mostly black on the sub-cover.
- "Bang the Drum Slowly" also had a made-up card game... TEGWAR = The Exciting Game Without Any Rules.

3.75 stars rounds up to a luke-warm 4.
