For me this isn't Connelly at his best. I found the story a little predictable and not a patch on The Brass Verdict or The Reversal. The Poet is a good villain who dangles perfectly from that tightrope from which disbelief is suspended. The closing scenes in 'the narrows' are the best parts of the book but even these have a kind of Bondesque inevitability about them. I never really felt that Harry Bosch and Rachel Walling were in any real peril.

As a whole it's well written of course although the dialogue sometimes feels forced but that's just me. I prefer naturally occurring talk, dialogue full of the grammatical shortcuts we all make every day.

Good but not great.
