A twisty, riveting psychological thriller starring - and narrated by - a married couple that knows all the conventions of psychological thrillers and true-crime narratives, Gone Girl is like the Scream of neo-noir. It's self-reflexive without being post-modern. It's also a very disturbing portrait of a modern marriage between smart people who are perfectly matched to drive each other mad. It's probably too much of a spoiler to call this an superb update on an immensely popular legal thriller from some years back, so I'll leave that earlier novel unnamed for now ;) Well-written + addictively entertaining + squirm-inducing = one of the best novels of the season!
