How would the world behave if you not only knew it was about to end but knew how, when, and where? And would anyone care about law enforcement anymore? I really enjoyed this pre-apocalyptic police procedural. Detective Hank Palace, elevated to detective status after only a brief time as a policeman because of personnel departures for one reason or another, all because of the asteroid heading in earth's direction, insists on doing his duty when he senses something amiss in an apparent suicide.

The mystery is solid, but far more interesting is Winters' pre-apocalyptic world, one where laws have become more stringent, almost draconian, and yet irrelevant, and each of the residents of that world has his or her own approach to dealing with their remaining days.

This is apparently the first in a trilogy. Winters did leave a major plot line dangling at the end of The Last Policeman that should set up an interesting premise for at least one more Palace book.
