This is the rare trilogy sequel that surpasses the original. Although it's longer than the first book, it feels lighter, terser, and somehow weightier. Despite the ultimate villain having been killed in the first entry (not really a spoiler), there's still a compelling quest narrative and a mysterious mythology to drive things forward. And all the good things from the first book, like the interesting magic system and the strong characters, are back in force, while the weak aspects, such as the dull ball room sequences, have been ditched. It's unlikely you would have stopped at the first book if you enjoyed it at all, but the second is definitely worth reading.
