A fast and easy read, which is not to say it's light and disposable, far from it. The first person narration isn't exactly a naturalistic device, but it drew me in. I found the love story ultimately more compelling than the political aspect. I felt that the way in which he turned, reluctantly, into a fundamentalist (not a spoiler: it's right there in the title) was a little rushed and didn't entirely convince me, although the ambiguity of the ending seemed apt. I'll be interested to see how they handle that part in the upcoming film.
