I had already read David Sheff's "Beautiful Boy", which was heartbreaking; this book was mostly sad, a memoir following the young author through two relapses from sobriety, the first mostly spent with the down-and-out of San Francisco, the second with the well-to-do of Los Angeles. No matter, the drugs take everyone to the lowest common denominator, desperate for the next fix, stealing, cheating, selling anything at hand, using anyone at hand. In his sober periods, the author comes across as pretty likeable, so the contrast with the binges is unsettling.
