Mary and her friends are seniors who are about to graduate high school and go off in different directions to college. They form their self-named group, the "Also-rans" to compete in a senior scavenger hunt and to try to take back some measure of respect from the classmates who tormented them their entire lives. In the span of one night, secrets are revealed, hearts are broken and they all have a night they will never forget. Tara Altebrando's Dreamland Social Club was a great surprise of a novel and I read The Best Night of Your (Pathetic) Life based on the strength of that book, not even knowing what the plot was going to be. I can very gladly say that Altebrando is growing as a writer. She has a great ear for dialogue and a talent for creating well-rounded characters. I read this in one sitting--I literally did not want to put it down. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
