More solidly embedded in the surf culture than THE WINTER OF FRANKIE MACHINE. Since I have never had any particular fascination with surf culture, I was prepared to like this setting and these character less, but Winslow provides a convincing and engaging back story for each the members of the Dawn Patrol that makes them real and sympathetic. And his description of the surfing itself, although it doesn't make me want to head for the ocean, certainly goes a long way to explaining why the sport and the lifestyle could be so fascinating.

The central "mystery" is well constructed. It get kind of dark when we find out what is really going on behind the scenes, but it is well resolved.
