What do you get if you cross Star Trek, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and Grant Morrison's Animal Man? Lots of words. Maybe even a plot like that in Redshirts.

This comic novel follows some of those expendable crew members as they realize that not all is well on their ship. For some reason, the 5 main bridge officers never get hurt but there's always a "sacrifice" of a nameless ensign who goes with them on away missions. This leads to some theorizing and a realization that the universe of redshirts is some sort of spin-off effect from the creation of a television show. Gets weirder from there.

The actual novel is about 180 pages long, and funny, and then there are 3 appendices told from the point of view of minor characters that wrap up some loose ends.
