Wonderful even-handed look at the Middle East. He was a reporter there and knew the area and its politics well.
So how did such a smart guy get other issues so wrong?
He covered the Middle East, studied, knew the languages ... yet ended up supporting the invasion of Iraq.
He also messed up about globalization. So governments aren't supposed to do anything? Yes, they are, when there's trouble.
I haven't read any books of his since "Beirut." I read his columns, and I like his latest push for breakthroughs in new-energy technology.
So what's his problem? He's addicted to happy endings. He's too American. It's hard to think that things will not end well.
He thinks America will solve global warming, pollution etc.
Oh? So how do we persuade the Chinese?
